Trend Watch: Grandmillennial Style

Granny Chic Style
with a Flare
of Individuality

It’s been a busy year with all that has been going on, so you may have missed this 2020 design trend. Originally identified by House Beautiful as a mashup of two generations of style, The Grandmillennial home trend has been popping up on social media feeds since early in the year and continues to inspire home owners and renters of all ages to mix things up.

Traditional Design with a Twist

The look is traditional design with a twist: blending elements of classic design, with a contemporary edge. With big portions of pattern and texture, this granny chic style shows off your individuality and adds personality to your room. The flashbacks to earlier decades build a décor story that’s unique and personal to you.

With a desire to honor your history and create a deeper connection to your environment, elements from the past can feel comforting and have a greater emotional tie. The style incorporates traditional woods and upholstery in monochromatic hues or complimented by colours next to each other on the colour wheel.

Identify The Key Room Elements

We see a few other by-gone trends return for this look with scalloped edges and skirting to highlight decorative accents. Updated needlepoint or cross-stitch with modern whimsical phrases become unique personal touches and rattan and wicker accent pieces bring in elements of texture. Fine family china, an old tea service or vintage pottery can add shape and pops of colour to this design. Treasured collections passed down from generation to generation find renewed life, and a story to share. All of these elements create the layers needed to combine with your current modern finds.

Get started by identifying the key room elements that you want to be the main focal points in your Grandmillenial room. The collections, throwback trend, fabulous finds or ‘Grandma’s Treasures’ you’ll be upcycling and how they layer onto your modern-day pieces. Don’t be afraid to mix your wood colours and finishes and be sure to include both your modern and traditional style pieces, as this is key to the success of the look.
