Why Do Cats Scratch?

Contrary to what your shredded armchair may suggest, cats don’t scratch just to destroy your favorite things. Scratching is a natural behavior that helps them stretch, sharpen their claws, mark their territory, and relieve stress. Their paws even contain scent glands, so that "scratching post" (read: your leather loveseat) becomes a way of leaving a calling card for other pets.

Tip: Scratching isn’t going away, but you can redirect it with cat trees and horizontal scratch pads. Or… you can have furniture that can actually handle it. (More on that in a sec.)

Why Do Dogs Kick Up Dirt After They Poop?

Weird, right? But it’s not just a quirky post-potty dance. When dogs scrape the ground after doing their business, they’re spreading scent from the glands in their paws—basically saying, “I was here” in bold letters. It’s part instinct, part communication.

Unfortunately, sometimes that instinct follows them indoors—and your rugs or couch legs take the hit.

Why Do Dogs Scratch the Furniture?

Dogs scratch furniture for a few reasons: to dig a cozy nest, to alleviate anxiety, or just because it smells like you (and they love you that much). If your pup is constantly pawing at your cushions, it’s often a comfort-seeking behavior.

Translation: They’re not being destructive on purpose. They’re just being themselves.

So... What Can You Do?

Here’s the truth: you can’t train away every instinct. But you can choose furniture that’s built to live with pets—not fight against them.

That’s why we’re proud to introduce Pawsh—our new line of pet-resistant furniture, designed with real life (and real animals) in mind.

Built with durable, easy-to-clean fabrics that stand up to paws, claws, and tail wags, Pawsh combines style and strength in a way both you and your pets will love. Think cozy, modern designs made to resist fur, stains, and scratching—without sacrificing comfort or aesthetics.

Because we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between a beautiful home and a happy pet.
